What to Do Right Now if Your Roof Is Leaking
1. Move things and contain the water
Get furniture and electronics out from under the drip and put a bucket down. If the ceiling is bulging with trapped water, place a bucket underneath and pierce the low point of the bulge with a screwdriver to release it in a controlled way. A ceiling that lets go on its own does far more damage.
2. Kill power to the affected area
If water is anywhere near a light fixture, ceiling fan, or outlet, switch off that circuit at the breaker panel before you go anywhere near it. Water tracks along framing and can reach wiring well away from the visible stain.
3. Photograph everything before you clean up
Date-stamped photographs of the interior damage, the standing water and any debris are exactly what your adjuster will want to see. Take more than you think you need, and do not throw anything away until the claim is settled.
4. Call us, and do not climb up there
Wet roofing is genuinely dangerous, and a roof that has just taken storm damage may have compromised decking that will not hold your weight. We tarp roofs in the dark and in the rain because we have the equipment and the fall protection to do it. Call (469) 470-0610.
